The whole processor is built on a 7-nanometer technology which is the same as the processors from Apple and Huawei. Normally Qualcomm has an octa-core processor with four high-performance cores and four energy-efficient cores. But in Snapdragon 855 they have gone with a one plus three plus four set up, Qualcomm is saying that it will give you up to 45{4c8208f40a3bfb7c707da805487d02877323e3f237411057a481ffa403c1a164} performance increase.

Qualcomm Kryo 485 CPU

  • One prime core clock speed: Up to 2.84 GHz.
  • Three performance cores clock speed: Up to 2.42GHz.
  • Four efficiency cores clock speed: Up to 1.80 GHz.

The one core is called the prime core and it has a higher clock speed of that the three high-performance cores. This single core reaches 2.84 GHz, it has also got a larger amount of cache. The other three high-performance cores have a clock speed of 2.4 GHz and the four energy efficient cores are clocked at 1.8 GHz.

Qualcomm named it as Adreno Visual subsystem. They have got a new Adreno 640. The Adreno 640 is said to be a 20{4c8208f40a3bfb7c707da805487d02877323e3f237411057a481ffa403c1a164} increase compared to the GPU we found in the Snapdragon 845. The additional features the Adreno 640 comes with includes support for Vulkan 1.1, we have got HDR gaming that gives you 10bit color in rec 2020, it has got physically based rendering, harder accelerations for H.265 and for VP9, there is hardware playback for HDR 10, HDR 10+, Dolby vision and much more.

Qualcomm is keen to promote the idea of VR or all the other experiences you can get with the virtual reality, it can handle 8k 360 degrees VR video playback. The strength of Qualcomm has always been its GPU and the power of its visual cell system and it seems that the Snapdragon 855 comes with a powerful GPU.

Spectra 380 ISP



The Spectra 380 ISP supports the dual 14-bit computer system assisted image signal processing which means it can handle 22 megapixels at 30 frames a second in two cameras simultaneously or 48 megapixels at 30 frames a second for a single camera. The hardware computer vision functions include things like object detection, tracking and depth processing. We have 4k at 60 frames a second in HDR10 and HDR10+ along with bokeh in a portrait mode and along with a greater color gamut.

Earlier when you see HDR content on an HDR display you relied on services like Netflix or Youtube to send over videos that have been recorded that way, now the videos that you record with a Snapdragon 855 powered smartphone can record things in 10-bit color and then you can see that 10-bit color back when you play it back on your smartphone. It also includes Electronic image stabilization, HEIF photo capture, and H.265, it can do 480 frames a second slo-mo at 720p.

Snapdragon 855 includes the Hexagon 690 processor, it has a significant performance increase compared to the Snapdragon 845. They have added some extra vector extensions in their processor. The first one of those allows it to do more neural networking associated stuff that’s the Hexagon tensor accelerator. We have also got Hexagon voice assistant.

Qualcomm Artificial Intelligence Engine

Qualcomm pointed out that it has a heterogeneous approach to their AI engine, which means it will farm out tasks to the DSP or to the GPU or to the CPU according to what it thinks is the best piece of hardware to handle that task and which piece of hardware can handle it in the most power-efficient way.

The Snapdragon 855 does not have a built-in 5g modem it will use an external modem placed on the SOC next to the processor. It has a built-in 4G LTE modem (X24 modem). The Snapdragon 855 processor supports Wi-Fi six ready, Bluetooth 5 and location services.

From Geekbench 5 test Snapdragon 855 shows a significant 30% increase in single-core performance and an 18 % increase in multi-core performance over Snapdragon 845.
